Overview

The Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in vocal performance prepares singers for careers not limited to work with professional vocal ensembles, opera companies, production companies, and music academies. Viterbo University singers can receive rigorous training in both classical and contemporary styles and are competitive in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Classical Singer, and Schubert Club competitions. Viterbo performance graduates consistently matriculate to prestigious graduate programs and opera internships. The program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Policy
    • All music majors are required to attend the weekly music department forum every semester in which they are enrolled except for semesters they are registered for MUSC 425 or 429.
    • All music majors are required to register for MUSC 137/337 (Concert Choir) every semester in which they are enrolled except for semesters they are registered for MUSC 425 or 429.
    • All music majors must register for a piano class, aural skills class, and music theory class each semester until all sequences are successfully completed. Music majors who have not completed all levels of Piano Proficiency, Aural Skills, and Music Theory by the end of their sixth semester of full-time study in music must petition the music department to continue as a music major.
    • 100-level ensembles and applied lessons courses are for freshmen and sophomore standing and 300-level ensembles and applied lessons courses are for junior and senior standing
    • Music Majors taking MUVO 171/371 must concurrently be registered for MUVO 172/372

Learning Outcomes
  • Develop literacy of music through analysis, arrangement, composition, and improvisation.
  • Distinguish important stylistic trends in music, including western, popular, and world genres.
  • Demonstrate performance skills requisite for artistic self expression.
  • Apply knowledge of current teaching methods, materials, and technology to musical instruction.

Requirements

Complete ENGL-103 and 104 or 105 or 195. Requirement must be completed before the end of the sophomore year.
Complete one approved sophomore writing intensive course.
Complete three credits of approved quantitative literacy. Requirement must be completed before the end of the sophomore year.
Complete one approved information literacy course. Requirement must be completed before the end of the sophomore year.
Complete one approved oral communication course. Requirement must be completed before the end of the sophomore year.

Complete one Franciscan Values and Traditions course (VUSM-100 level course). Transfer or re-entry students may have one or two mission seminars waived based on the number of transfer or completed credits.
Complete one Living in a Diverse World course. Transfer or re-entry students may have one or two mission seminars waived based on the number of transfer or completed credits.
Complete one Social Justice and Equity course.
Complete one The Ethical Life course (VUSM-400 level).

Complete three credits of historical analysis.
Complete three credits of literary analysis.
Complete four credits of scientific reasoning in the natural sciences.
Complete three credits of scientific reasoning in the social sciences.
Complete three credits of artistic engagement.
Complete three credits of theological inquiry.
Complete three credits of integrating faith and practice.
Complete three credits of philosophical and moral inquiry.

CNSV 350 or 355, MUSC 105, 106, 107, 151, 152, 205, 206, 207, 251, 265, 327, 328, 453, eight credits of MUPI or MUVO 171/371, eight semesters of MUSC 137/337 (min four credits). A student must also declare an emphasis from voice or piano.

Complete a minimum of 40 upper division credits (300/400).
Complete a minimum of 120 college-level credits.
