Have you taken graduate credit in a similar, regionally accredited, graduate program to the one you are exploring at Viterbo? If so, you may have credit that is eligible for transfer of credit.
Prior credit must be:
- Earned from a regionally accredited institution
- Credits must be from Master's or Doctoral level course
- You must have earned a grade of 'B' or higher (grade of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
- Credits must have been earned within a particular number of years (details found in the program-specific information below)
- The course must be approximately an 80% match for the course you are petitioning to waive/substitute
To petition for transfer of credit you must submit:
- Official transcript(s) (if not submitted as part of the application process)
- Course description
- Course syllabus
- The Petition of Transfer of Credit Form (or letter) at time of acceptance, prior to enrolling, indicating which classes you are petitioning for review
Program Specific Details:
Each program has specific requirements regarding the age of the credit and the total number of credit hours that they will allow for transfer credit. These limits are based up the total number of credits of the program and program residency standards to earn the degree. Each program establishes the maximum age of the courses that they will allow to transfer to ensure accreditation, licensure, and currency of knowledge to ensure you are prepared to achieve your professional and personal goals.
Business & Servant Leadership
MBA Programs
Transfer Credits: Students may transfer up to nine credits of prior graduate coursework into the MBA program. Credit will only be granted for coursework completed within the last 10 years at a regionally accredited university. Requests to transfer credits should be made in writing to the program director or assistant director of enrollment by the end of the student's first semester of coursework. Requests must be accompanied by an official transcript from the institution at which prior credits were earned. To be considered for credit, students must: 1) demonstrate the relevance of the prior coursework to existing MBA program learning outcomes and 2) have earned a 'B' or better in the prior coursework.
Viterbo University Graduate Certificate Credits Applied to the MBA: A graduate course taken as part of a certificate program at Viterbo University may later be applied to satisfy MBA program requirements, given:
- The student has applied and been accepted into the MBA program.
- A grade of 'B' or better has been received on the certificate course.
- The course is considered relevant to the MBA at the time of admission.
- The course was taken within the timeframe specified for transferable credits in Viterbo’s graduate program catalog.
A student who completes a certificate and then enters the MBA program cannot declare the certificate program as an emphasis. If they choose to declare a different emphasis during the MBA program, that will be the emphasis designation on the official transcript.
Servant Leadership Program
Participants may transfer up to nine credits of prior graduate coursework into the MASL program. Credit will only be granted for coursework completed within the last 10 years at a regionally accredited university. Request to transfer credits must be made in the student's first semester and accompanied by an official transcript from the institution at which prior credits were earned. To be considered for credit, students must:
- demonstrate the relevance of the prior coursework to existing MASL program learning outcomes, and;
- have earned a grade of 'B' or better in the prior coursework.
Education
M.A. in Education
Transfer Courses: Candidates may petition for up to six (6) credits of graduate coursework, taken prior to beginning the MAE program, for transfer as elective credit only. Professional development and AEA courses are not eligible for transfer. Candidates must submit official transcripts and petition for transfer at the time of application. Credits must have been earned at a regionally accredited institution and taken within the following time frame for the following M.A. in Education programs:
- Seven (7) years of application for applicants and areas of emphasis in all states except for the M.A. in Education with Principal (Iowa 189)
- Five (5) years of application for students enrolling in the Iowa M.A. in Education with Principal (IA 189)
Note regarding Viterbo University Professional Development coursework:
- Effective June 1, 2012, EDEX credits are not eligible for transfer of credit
- Effective 2017 EDUC/EDPD 510, 546, 547, 548, 549 courses are not eligible for transfer of credit

Ed.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision
Transfer Credits upon Admission
Individual consideration will be granted in the awarding of transfer credits. Up to 15 credits may be transferred from another doctoral program and utilized to meet the Ed.D program requirements of Viterbo University, if equivalent. In order to be considered for transfer, the grade of 'B' or better must have been earned. Transfer credits must be graduate credits taken from an accredited institution of higher education completed within the last five years and equivalent to the course it is replacing in the requirements at Viterbo. Coursework older than five years may be given credit based on individual review. Students who wish to transfer credits schedule a meeting with the Director of the Education in Counselor Education and Supervision. Courses will be evaluated for equivalency; written notification of acceptance of transfer credits will be provided to the student by the director.

The faculty of the Viterbo University Doctorate of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision program has carefully planned and developed a curriculum to meet the needs of the potential graduates of the chosen tracks. The content for the curriculum was designed for the curricular and graduate outcomes unique to this program and the specific role preparation.
M.S. in Mental Health Counseling & M.S. in School Counseling
Individual consideration will be granted in the awarding of transfer credits in order to ensure that the student meets the licensure requirements as a Professional Counselor. Up to 15 credits may be transferred from another CACREP accredited program. Coursework older than five years may be given credit based on individual review.
Nursing (DNP)
Transfer Credits upon Admission
Individual consideration will be granted in the awarding of transfer credits.
- Up to 18 credits may be transferred from another program and utilized to meet the post-baccalaureate to DNP program requirements of Viterbo University if equivalent.
- Up to nine credits may be transferred to the post-MSN to DNP program if equivalent. In order to be considered for transfer, the grade earned must be at least a 'B' or better.
Transfer credits must be graduate credit taken from an accredited institution of higher education completed within the last five years and equivalent to the course it is replacing in the requirements at Viterbo. Courses older than five years may be given credit based on individual review. Students who wish to transfer credits must have an official transcript sent to the director of the graduate nursing program. Courses will be evaluated for equivalency and written notification of acceptance of transcript credit will be provided to the student by the director.
Transfer Credits after Admission
The faculty of the Viterbo University graduate nursing program has carefully planned and developed a curriculum to meet the needs of the potential graduates of the chosen tracks. The content for the curriculum was designed for the curricular and graduate outcomes unique to this program and the specific role preparation. In view of the connection of the curriculum to the desired outcomes and the quality of the graduate, once a student has begun classes as a degree-seeking student in the Viterbo University graduate nursing program, all classes (excluding electives) must be taken at Viterbo University. Note: This policy is not applicable to post-MSN to DNP students wishing AGNP or FNP role preparation whose plan of study will be determined on an individual basis or to agreements established with collaborating institutions.
Direct Entry to Nursing (MSN)
Individual consideration will be granted in the awarding of transfer credits. Up to six credits may be transferred to the DEMSN program, if equivalent. In order to be considered for transfer, the grade earned must be at least a 'B'. Transfer credits must be graduate credit taken from an accredited institution of higher education completed within the last five years and equivalent to the course it is replacing in the requirements at Viterbo. Courses older than five years may be given credit based on individual review. Students who wish to transfer credits must have official transcripts sent to the director of the DEMSN program. Courses will be evaluated for equivalency and written notification of acceptance of transcript credit will be provided to the student by the director.
Students who have complete any graduate-level courses may be eligible to transfer up to six credits to satisfy various curriculum requirements and will be assessed on an individual basis.
Community Medical Dietetics
Transfer Credits upon Admission
Individual consideration will be granted in the awarding of transfer credits based upon the track in the M.S. in Community Medical Dietetics, if equivalent.
- Up to six graduate-level credits may be transferred into the 30-hour path for current RDNs and Dual DI and MS path.
- Up to 15 hours of credit may be substituted or transferred into the 63-hour Direct-Entry initial RDN licensure path.

Credits must have been earned from a regionally accredited and ASHA accredited program, taken within the last seven years, have an earned grade of B or better, and be equivalent to the course it is replacing in the requirements at Viterbo.
