Nutrition Science Scholarship

The Nutrition Science Scholarship Competition awards scholarships to high school students intending to pursue a major in nutrition science at Viterbo. Finalists will be selected from the applicant pool to participate in an on-campus competition. All finalists invited to and participating in the competition will receive a minimum of a $4,000 scholarship (over four years). The first-place student will receive a $24,000 scholarship (over four years), the second-place student will receive a $16,000 scholarship (over four years), and the third-place student will receive a $8,000 scholarship (over four years). 

Scholarship Criteria

  1. Must complete scholarship application (i.e., submit the essay) by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2025.
  2. Must be admitted to Viterbo University prior to scholarship application deadline.
  3. Must be a new, incoming first-year student for fall 2025.
  4. Must intend to major in nutrition science.

After all scholarship applications have been received, finalists will be selected and invited to compete in the on-campus competition taking place on Friday, January 31, 2025. This competition will determine the scholarship amount awarded to each finalist. Finalists must compete in-person to be eligible for scholarship money. Overall evaluation of finalists at the competition may include, but is not limited to:

  • Materials previously submitted, such as the application, scholarship essay, and high school transcripts.
  • Proctored exams, interviews, or projects on the day of the competition.

The scholarship application is found in the Viterbo application portal (see link below) and is accessible immediately after submission of your application for admission*. 

To find the scholarship application once logged into the application portal, click on your 2025 Fall - Nutrition Science application. On the next screen, select Supplemental Items & Recommendations, select Nutrition Science Scholarship, and then upload an essay for the scholarship.

Essay details:

  • Prompt: Please address both questions. Why are you passionate about studying or pursuing a career related to nutrition science? What have you done to prepare yourself for a career in nutrition science through school, work, volunteering, or other opportunities or experiences?
  • Length and formatting: the essay should be approximately 500-words in length and formatted using double-spaced line spacing, 12 pt. font size, and Times New Roman font. Formatting and readability of the essay will be considered during the application review process. Aside from the formatting mentioned above, no specific style is required, but documents should look professional. Please also include first and last name on any uploaded documents. 

*Students applying to Viterbo via the Common App will have a short delay in access to the application. An email will be sent to the student with instructions on how to access the Viterbo application portal.

Scholarship Dates

July 1, 2024 and Aug. 1, 2024: the Viterbo admission application and the Common Application open for fall 2025

Sept. 1, 2024: the Nutrition Science Scholarship application will be available in the application portal by Sept. 1

Jan. 12, 2025: to be reviewed for eligibility, students should be admitted to Viterbo and have submitted the scholarship application along with required supplemental items by 11:59 p.m.

Jan. 17, 2025: applicants will be notified via email that they have been selected as a finalist no later than Jan. 17

Jan. 31, 2025: live, in-person competition for invited finalists

Event Details

Invitations to register for the scholarship competition will be emailed to selected finalists. Please register by Jan. 24 to ensure your spot in the competition. 

Schedule: event will run, tentatively, 8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. A finalized schedule will be posted here closer to the event date.
