Counselor Education and Supervision (EdD)

Developed with the working professional in mind, the EdD is a 60-credit hour, evening and weekend, year-round program that can be completed in four years, taking as little as six credits per semester. An accelerated track is also available, completing nine credits per semester over a three-year period. Successful completion of the program includes a written and oral examination and the dissertation sequence.

Innovative Teacher Leadership and Instructional Coaching Certificate (Iowa/National)

This online certificate is an interdisciplinary program ideal for instructors from academic to business settings, teaching traditional and nontraditional students. The curriculum focuses on adult learning theory and is designed to increase instructor capacity to improve universal instruction and foster interpersonal relationships. Evidenced-based practices combine with adult learning strategies to create environments where student engagement and achievement thrive. Servant leadership, social justice, and working for the common good are intertwined throughout the curriculum. The Innovative Teacher Leadership and Instructional Coaching certificate is designed as an enhanced learning opportunity, it will not lead to an Iowa Endorsement or License.

Pair with the Master of Arts in Education, an additional six credits for a total 31 credit hours.

Master of Arts in Education (Generalist)

The Master of Arts in Education Generalist Degree is designed for educators who aspire to work at the forefront of change and reform in education. Coursework will challenge educators to explore the changing role of the teacher in an educational context. Academic study is flexible and educators will have considerable choice in selecting courses that will meet their individual need and interest.

  • 15-credits of M.A. core coursework (six courses)
  • 15-credits of elective courses taken from Educational Leadership, Reading Teacher, Cross-categorical Special Education, or Innovative Teacher Leadership

Master of Arts in Education with PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189)

This Master of Arts in Education prepares educators to become school leaders following the standards set by the Iowa Department of Education. When PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189) is chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 17 courses (36-credit hours).

  • 24-credits core coursework (8 courses)

  • 6-credits clinical/internship (6 courses)

  • 6-credits (electives or Curriculum Leadership emphasis)

Master of Arts with Cross-categorical Special Education (WI 2801)

Our Cross-categorical Special Education emphasis brings educators from across the state together to learn best practices in the field of special education. Our classes view individuals with disabilities from a strengths-based model, and help educators work toward successful inclusion of individuals with disabilities. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 13 courses (34-37 credit hours).

Our Director of Instruction program prepares school administrators to have more focused instruction and preparation in the area of Curriculum and Instruction. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 14 courses (39-credit hours).

Our Director of Special Education and Pupil Services program prepares school administrators to have more focused instruction in the areas of Special Education and Pupil Services at the district and site levels. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 16 courses (45-credit hours).

Our Reading Specialist (WI 5017) prepares educators to lead and supervise district-wide reading programs. Educators will increase their knowledge of assessment tools and diagnostic practices to plan and develop reading programs that increase student learning and achievement. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 11 courses (31-credit hours).

Master of Arts with Reading Teacher (WI 1316)

Our Reading Teacher (WI 1316) emphasis is designed for practicing educators who wish to increase their instructional skills and expand their knowledge and expertise in areas of literacy and reading. Coursework will focus on preparing teachers to utilize research-based practices to assess, diagnose, and remediate struggling readers. When chosen as your area of emphasis, your master's degree will be 10 courses (30-credit hours).

Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling (MSMHC)

The Viterbo University Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling degree is accredited by The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The program is designed to meet state requirements for licensure as mental health counselors in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Iowa. The key content areas include professional identity, social and cultural diversity, human growth and development, helping relationships, career development, group work, assessment, diagnosis, research, program evaluation, and evidence-based counseling, prevention, and intervention skills.

Master of Science in School Counseling

At Viterbo, we are committed to your success. A program faculty advisor is assigned to work with you throughout the program, and we offer professional development throughout the academic year, including day-long conferences and workshops. Student organizations provide social activities, philanthropic opportunities, and community-based advocacy.

PK-12 Principal/Supervisor of Special Education (IA 189)

Our Iowa PK-12 Principal -Supervisor of Special Education 189 is a two-year, six-semester program which requires an internship during each of the six semesters. The internship is conducted onsite with an approved mentor, which is usually the student's principal. This program meets the standards set by the Iowa Department of Education.

  • 24 credits of core principal coursework (8 courses)

  • 6 credits of clinical/internship (6 semesters/courses)
