At Viterbo University, the advising and career development team provides support and resources to help students develop values-based academic and career paths that will leverage each individual's gifts, talents, and goals.

Our advisors provide comprehensive academic and career advising, degree planning, and major and career discovery services to assist students in selecting the right major and career.

We boast a four-year graduation guarantee. When you use our services early and often, you will join the ranks of our successful students. For the last 10 years, our students have enjoyed a 95%+ “placement rate,” which means our students found a job in their field of study or a related one.

We are committed to honoring unique identities, encouraging self-discovery, and helping individuals gain valuable experience to develop as professionals and launch their post-Viterbo plans.

Major exploration course
All exploring/undeclared students are required to take this in-person, intensive, one-credit, eight-week course that facilitates life and career discovery.

Detecting early signs of student success or concern
Early Alert + Early Intervention = Increased Student Success!
Our department responds to early signs of success or concern using Starfish, an early alert system and platform for instructors to provide feedback for students in the form of “kudos” for exemplary progress or “flags” for areas of concern. If areas of concern are indicated, we can intervene early with tools like outreach and meetings, connecting to resources, and more. Starfish’s mission is to motivate students who are doing well and identify students who are having some academic difficulty.

Integrating real-world learning
We are one of only 25 member institutions of the Council of Independent Colleges Consortium for Work-Based Learning. This program integrates real-world, employer-designed projects into existing courses that will equip you with skills, real-world experiences, and professional connections to support your future career success.

We offer a variety of career assessments to help you learn how your interests, personality, and strengths may complement various occupations. Many assessments can be taken independently, but some will be interpreted alongside a career advisor.

    If you are currently exploring, don’t feel that you fit with your present major, or want to talk about crafting a path to career success, you will benefit from career advising. A career advisor is available to listen to your needs and administer assessments that will help you understand how your interests, personality, and strengths help shape your choice of major and career.

    This interactive tool for job seekers and students, from the U.S. Department of Labor, helps you learn more about their career options. The site offers tasks, skills, salary information, and more for over 900 different careers.

    Informational Interviews

    An informational interview is a conversation you initiate with someone who works in an industry that interests you. You are the interviewer, rather than the interviewee.  Conducting informational interviews can help you determine if a particular career path is right for you and expand your professional network.     Job Shadowing

    Job shadowing provides you with an opportunity to observe professionals in their occupations. As you experience what the employee does in their daily work, you can ask questions similar to those in an informational interview. This type of experience provides insight into whether an occupation will be a good fit for your post-graduation plans.

    Each page provides a glimpse of workers with a particular degree and shows occupations, outlook, and more for people in that major. Click on a Field of Degree link to explore the information, which includes links to relevant profiles in the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

    Major Exploration Course and Career Professional Development Seminar
    UNST 110 – Major Exploration

    This one-credit course facilitates life and career decision-making. Class activities encourage examination of personality characteristics and interests along with personal and occupational values. You will also delve into your abilities, skills, and aptitudes. Explore the world of work and requisite academic preparation, generate occupational and academic goals, and make knowledgeable and appropriate decisions. This course is designed for entering and undeclared students and is offered each semester.

    UNST 310 – Career Professional Development Seminar

    This one-credit online course is designed for upper-division students who want to prepare for internships or careers after college. You will develop greater awareness of how your interests and personality affect your career choice. Investigate possible career paths as well as develop application materials, create effective search strategies, and practice interview skills to prepare for the next steps in your career development. The seminar is offered each semester.
