A Post-Baccalaureate Initial Teacher Licensure Program for Wisconsin 

Viterbo University's School of Education prepares educators who are grounded in Franciscan values and possess the knowledge and skills to be reflective decision-makers for the 21st Century.  This online post-baccalaureate master's program is an accelerated, licensure path for students who already have an undergraduate degree and are seeking an initial teaching license.

Post Bac Education Handbook

    Three Licensure Options:

    Secondary Education - Content Licensures 

    Program Format and Licensure Options

    For licensure in secondary education in content areas (English language arts, art, science, broad field social studies, business, mathematics, music, technology education, and Spanish.) The Secondary Licensure paths offer online coursework with in-person Pre-Student Teaching and Student Teaching placements in a school district in your region. We offer rolling admission, and candidates may apply to start in the fall (August), spring (January), or summer (May) semesters.  

    • Art Education
    • Business Education
    • English 
    • Mathematics
    • Music 
    • Social Studies 
    • Science (Biology or Chemistry)
    • Spanish
    • Technology Education

    Policy for secondary education:

    • Completion of required content coursework (art, broad field social studies, business education, cross-categorical, English, mathematics, music, science, Spanish, or technology education) with a grade of “C” or better, and may also require a passing score on the Praxis II exam for the Content Area you are seeking licensure, or ACTFL exams for Spanish Education
    • Completion of all Content Area Teacher Education required coursework 
    • Pre-Student Teaching Experience (required, in a location in your region) 
    • Student Teaching (required, in a location in your region) 
    • Earn a passing score on the Viterbo Portfolio Presentation 

    Cross-categorical Special Education Licensure

    Program Format

    The Cross-categorical Special Education Licensure Program offers fully online coursework with in-person Pre-Student Teaching and Student Teaching placements in a school district in your region. We offer rolling admission, allowing students to begin the program in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. 

    Policy for Cross-categorical Special Education:

    • Completion of all Cross-categorical Special Education Teacher Education required coursework
    • Pre-Student Teaching Experience (required, in a location in your region) 
    • Student Teaching (required, in a location in your region)
    • Earn a passing score on the Wisconsin Foundations of Reading Test or complete EDUC 681 and EDUC 690 with a grade earned of 'B' or better
    • Earn a passing score on the Viterbo Portfolio Presentation 


    Elementary Education Licensure

    Program Format

    The Elementary Education Licensure Program offers fully online coursework with in-person Pre-Student Teaching and Student Teaching placements in a school district in your region.  Students who enroll on a full-time basis typically complete this program in two years (five to six semesters).  Candidates may start this program in the summer, fall, or spring semesters. 

    Policy for elementary education:

    • Completion of all Elementary Education Teacher Education coursework
    • Pre-Student Teaching Experience (required, in a location in your region) 
    • Student Teaching (required, in a location in your region)
    • Earn a passing score on the Wisconsin Foundations of Reading Test ( FoRT REQUIRED)
    • Earn a passing score on the Viterbo Portfolio Presentation 

    Pre-Student Teaching & Student Teaching Requirements

    Pre-Student Teaching:  All licensure candidates are required to complete Pre-Student Teaching Experience which will require observation of multiple grade levels and experiences.  These experiences are in-person in a district in your region.  Candidates must complete a comprehensive background check and gain approval.

    Student Teaching:   All licensure programs require an entire K-12 semester of student teaching completed in the last semester of the licensure program.  Candidates for student teaching will submit an application and updated background check.  Applicants holding an emergency license may student teach in their district of employment.  Each student will complete a Professional Portfolio presentation as part of the Student Teaching experience. 

    Admission Requirements

    Applying to the MA in Teaching, a post-baccalaureate initial teacher licensure program you will complete the "Graduate Application" and follow the requirements found under the Admissions Requirements under the Graduate Education programs. Applicants to the master's initial Teacher licensure paths will need to complete the following items.  Please visit the Admission Requirements Details page for guidance in completing the application for admission to the University and Program. 

    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
    • Generally, 3.0-grade point average is required for admission
    • GPA statement required for those with GPA below a 3.0
    • All Content Area coursework must have a grade earned of 'B' or better
    • A grade of 'C' or better in Written Communication, Oral Communication, and College Math coursework
    • Completed application including a written essay

    Once approved to enroll at the University, the candidate will be accepted into the School of Education upon successful completion of the first-semester core courses and successful completion of the background check process. 

    • Two criminal background checks (one before entering the School of Education program sequence and a second before field experiences)

    Financial Aid Information

    The Master of Arts in Teaching and the licensure-only Post-Baccalaureate Initial Licensure curriculum is considered a graduate-level program.   The master's is eligible for graduate student loans/aid.

    However, for Financial Aid purposes the licensure-only path is considered an undergraduate program for Federal Student Aid.  Please visit the Financial Aid page for more information or contact Graduate Admissions for initial information.
