The process for earning the school counselor license involves completion of the prescribed educational requirements, as well as completion of application materials, background checks, testing, and a designated number of hours of supervised practice.

The Master of Science in School Counseling program has been approved and meets the educational requirements for licensure by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

During their last semester of the program, students are required by the state of Wisconsin to register for their student pupil license and endorsement of K–12 school counselor. Viterbo University provides an endorsement to the state once all school counseling program requirements are completed. In addition, students are required by Wisconsin Department of Public instruction to take and pass the Praxis II Exam.

In the state of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is the governing body that oversees both the licensure and credential process.
