Nursing Admissions at Viterbo

At Viterbo University, there are several paths towards admission to the nursing major. Regardless of your path, the first step toward nursing admissions is to apply to Viterbo.

Direct Nursing Admission

If you meet certain first-year admissions requirements, you may be admitted directly to the nursing major.

Once admitted to Viterbo as a nursing major, you will submit a Professional Nursing Sequence application.

Holistic Admissions

If you are not directly admitted through first-year admissions, you can apply through holistic admissions.

Criteria for holistic admissions includes:

  • High school rank in the 50th percentile or higher
    • Applicants with no high school rank must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Completion of one year of high school chemistry, or equivalency, with grade of C or better
  • Completion of two years of high school algebra, or equivalency, with grades of C or better
  • Submit transcripts from all previous post secondary schools attended
  • Transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 on transfer credits 
Pre-Nursing Admissions

If you do not meet the requirements for holistic admissions or first-year admissions, you may be admitted as a pre-nursing student. You will complete coursework at Viterbo that will prepare you for admission to the nursing major.

 

Holistic Admissions Academic Requirements

A cumulative college-level grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 for all completed coursework is required.

For transfer applicants: GPA is calculated by Transfer and Adult Admissions.

For Viterbo applicants: GPA is the student’s Viterbo GPA.

You will be scored based on overall academic GPA.

To begin nursing designated courses in the sophomore level of the program, you must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 and show successful completion of the following courses or their equivalents:

  • Prerequisite coursework: ENG 103 or 105 or 195; CHEM 120 and 121 or CHEM 106; PSYC 171; BIO 104 and 114
  • A minimum grade of 2.0 (C) in chemistry and biology nursing prerequisites

You must apply for the Professional Nursing Sequence by April 1 or November 1 to be holistically reviewed.

Holistic Admissions Resume Requirements

To apply for holistic admissions, you must also submit a resume as a Word document to the Professional Nursing Sequence application for admission  for the BSN program by the appropriate deadline.

You will be scored based on resume format, content, and organization.

Format

Maximum of two pages using 12-point Times New Roman font and 1” margins. Resume should be organized in a professional manner with name and contact information at the top. Use the categories below as the body of the resume and include dates of the experience in month/year format.

Categories
  • Health Care Experience: Volunteer or paid work in a health care setting or any activity in a caregiver role (including care of a family member), which is personal or professional.
  • Other Work Experience: Include role and job responsibilities.
  • Community Service: Active participation in a group/community, such as a student organization, neighborhood club, church, etc.
  • Leadership Experience: Leadership situations where you have taken the lead, piloted a particular effort, and/or have trained individuals or groups.
  • Cultural Experience: Any cultural life experiences/activities in which you have been involved. For example: interpreter services, campus diversity workshops/events, campus clubs, lived experience, mission trips, and travel abroad. Focus on the intentionality of the cultural experience and how immersed you were in the cultural experience. Also include:
    • Non-English Language Proficiencies: For each language listed, indicate the level of your speaking ability, writing ability, reading ability: native, fluent, basic, very basic.

Holistic Admissions Essay Question Requirements

Respond to the question provided on the Professional Nursing Sequence application. Essay response should be 500–750 words.

Upload your essay as a Word document that addresses all components of the question and follow APA format ensuring responses are double-spaced. Please keep in mind that you are submitting a professional application.

You will be scored based on correct grammar, spelling, essay development and organization, as well as thoroughness in addressing each component of the essay question.
