A Gem of the Driftless Area
Positioned on the eastern shore of the Mississippi River, La Crosse is the largest city on Wisconsin's western border. La Crosse is located in the Driftless Area, composed of high ridges dissected by narrow valleys called coulees (a French term). As a result the area around La Crosse is referred to as the Coulee Region.
Surrounding the relatively flat valley where the city lies are towering 500-foot bluffs, one of the most prominent of which is Grandad Bluff, which has an overlook of the three state region. Full of natural beauty and small city charm, La Crosse is a top tourist destination within the state.
