Included in this year's logo design is a watercolor image of the Dancing Francis sculpture which is situated in Assisi Courtyard on the Viterbo University campus in La Crosse, Wis.
This 9′ tall bronze sculpture commemorating St. Francis of Assisi was created by American artist Paul T. Granlund, and is based on Francis’s canticle “Brother Sun, Sister Moon.”
The sculpture shows St. Francis holding a disc representing the sun and the round firmament on which he dances ever so lightly is the moon. In the disc there is a silhouette of the body of Jesus. We look upward at it. With the sky above, the silhouette reflects down on the figure of Francis. The hands of the Dancing Francis touch the sun at the spot where Jesus’ wounded hands are extended. His feet dance and his habit flies in the wind because his hands play with the burning fire of the cross.
