About

Research Interests

Research in my lab centers on the question of how genes are turned on and off--known as the process of transcription. I have long been fascinated by how DNA and protein interact to form the immense complexity of life around us and my lab investigates this question through studying how a bacteria that lives in the soil responds to metal ion stress. In addition to the research my lab takes on, I also am involved in research that examines best practices in teaching at the undergraduate level. I am always curious what approaches result in the best learning experiences for my students and try to quantify those differences whenever possible.
