Future Doctor Olivia Abernathy Helps Others Feel Welcome

Junior biology major Olivia Abernathy knows how important it is to respect and understand each other, especially in today’s global society.

“There is no possible way to avoid diversity in our lives, so we need to be kind to each other and recognize there are many people with different life experiences and identities,” Abernathy said. “Educating ourselves opens up our entire world.”

Helen Elsbernd, FSPA ’65 faced a difficult decision in 1976. Then a chemistry professor at Viterbo, she loved teaching. That year however, she was asked to become the academic dean of the college. It was a promotion to be sure, but one that would take her out of the classroom.

I am Father Conrad Targonski, a Franciscan and a Navy veteran. As a Navy chaplain, I served with sailors and Marines for over 22 years. Those years were extremely beneficial for me as I learned about St. Francis and St. Clare, the icons of Viterbo, as well as St. Francis’s experience of his return from war.

From Viterbo, Chad Milne Launched High-Flying Career 
When Chad Milne ’94 joined the Wisconsin National Guard as a high school junior, he didn’t plan on making a career of it. “Once I got in the Guard, though, it became more about the mission at hand, and then it became more about the camaraderie and the people I worked with,” said Milne, a combat fighter pilot who retired as a colonel.

Jervie Windom '15 was near the end of his military career when he decided to pursue a Master of Arts in Servant Leadership degree at Viterbo. Since retiring as master sergeant, he started a church near Houston, Texas, but his ministry can't be contained by the church walls.
