St. Rose Normal School was founded in 1890 by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, and what would become Viterbo University has been well known and respected for excellence and innovation in teacher education ever since. Viterbo has graduated thousands of top-notch teachers through the years. Meet four who are truly making a difference in their profession and the lives of their students.
Up Close with Wayne Wagner

The longest serving coach in Viterbo men’s basketball program history, Wayne Wagner ’92 has compiled 326 wins during his 23-year career at the university. He was named Coach of the Year by the North Star Athletic Association and the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association in 2022 for leading the V-Hawks to a conference co-championship and the conference tournament championship game.

Heidi Lenz’s work on a Master of Arts in Education degree at Viterbo University helped her build leadership skills that came in handy not only in the education arena but also in starting her dream business: an equestrian therapeutic center.

Spotlight on … Scott Stene ’16, ’17

Scott Stene’s journey to Viterbo was anything but typical. Stene grew up in Montana, spending his senior year of high school as an exchange student in Norway. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served in an expeditionary unit in Germany and traveled the world during four years of service.

Lauren Johnson's Theatre Journey Circles Back to Viterbo
Music theatre graduate Lauren Johnson ’21 made a leap last summer, moving to New York City just in time to land a part in a national tour of Hairspray. She'll feel right at home when the tour comes to the Viterbo Fine Arts Center Feb. 4–5.
