With over 68,000 streaming videos covering numerous subject areas, the Academic Video Online (AVON) database has a wide variety of content not only for instructional use, but also to watch just for fun. Included in the collection are videos from the A&E Television Network, the BBC, PBS, the History Channel, London's Royal Opera House, Live from Stratford-upon-Avon the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Discovery Channel, to name a few.
To browse through everything that's available, you can go to AVON's Channels page and scroll through the hundreds of channels. Some of the popular ones right now are BBC Landmark, CNN, Documentaries, Music & Performing Arts, PBS, and Sony Pictures Classics. Each channel has dozens, or hundreds, of streaming videos within it.
As we finish up Black History Month, I'd like to highlight the Black History channel. This channel currently contains 75 videos, mainly documentaries, about the giants of the civil rights fight such as Julian Bond, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Lewis, and Malcolm X, and about the dark history of enslavement and Jim Crow in America. Some pose intriguing questions such as, "Should Blacks Celebrate the Fourth of July?" and "Are Black Leaders Racist?" Visit the channel to see more of the titles that are available.
Next week, we will continue highlighting AVON by telling you about some of the Library staff's favorites in the database!
