VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT ARMS AND THE MAN AT THE WEBER CENTER APRIL 4–5, APRIL 11–13

CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University will present George Bernard Shaw’s
classic comedy Arms and the Man at
the Weber Center for the Performing Arts Friday, April 4–Saturday, April 5 and
Friday, April 11–Sunday, April 13.

First performed in London in 1894, Arms and the Man is set in Bulgaria
during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1895. This Viterbo production is directed by
Trevor Walker, a professor of drama at St. Mary’s University in England.

“In the play, Shaw satirizes both
romanticism and cynicism and although it is set in Bulgaria, he is clearly
writing about English society of the time,” Walker wrote in his director’s
notes. “His main focus is to debunk romantic attitudes towards war, but
throughout the course of the play all the pretensions of the various characters
are exposed.”

Famous British author George Orwell
wrote that Arms and the Man was “probably the wittiest
play Shaw ever wrote, the most flawless technically, and in spite of being a
very light comedy, the most telling.”

Arms and the Man is presented by special
arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. April 4–5 and April
11–12 and 2 p.m. April 13. Tickets are $20 for reserved seating. For more
