VITERBO UNIVERSITY MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING PROGRAM RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS CACREP ACCREDITATION

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, has granted accreditation to the Viterbo University Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling degree program.

The accreditation follows the CACREP board’s extensive review of self-study documents, a campus visit, and the CACREP visiting team’s report. The Viterbo Mental Health Counseling program received accreditation through October 2023. CACREP is widely considered the gold standard of counseling accreditation agencies and it is the preferred designation for employment at the Veterans Administration and other federal government agencies.

“Receiving the eight-year accreditation from CACREP is a testament to the dedication of the faculty, staff, and students at Viterbo,” said Deb Murray, director of Viterbo’s Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program. “The MSMHC program requires 60 credit hours of classroom education and 750 hours of supervised practice before graduation. We are very happy to receive this prestigious designation. It speaks very well to the quality of our program.”

The Viterbo University Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling program began in the fall of 2011 and had its first graduates in December 2013. It has become a premiere program in the region and has experienced robust enrollment each year. Viterbo’s program offers the unique aspect of allowing students to select an emphasis area for advanced training in substance abuse counseling, integrative health counseling, or child and adolescent counseling.
