VITERBO UNIVERSITY CHAMBER OPERA SERIES TO FEATURE GALLANTRY AND SIGNOR DELUSO APRIL 3–5

LA
CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University will present Gallantry and Signor Deluso
as part of the university’s Chamber Opera Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April
3–Saturday, April 5 in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

Gallantry,
written by Douglas Moore, is a parody of soap opera in which a dramatic battle
between good and evil unfolds as renowned surgeon Dr. Gregg unveils his love
for his nurse, Lola. Unfortunately, Lola is already engaged to Donald Hopewell,
who works in the cashier’s office at the same hospital. The parody even comes
complete with commercials.

Signor
Deluso, by Thomas Pasatieri, is a farce in which love, mistaken identities,
and false accusations play a major role in the over-the-top plot. Romantic
interests initially all fall victim to misunderstandings as a result.

“The operas pair very well with each
other because of the comedic elements in each,” said David Richardson, Viterbo
faculty member and music director of the productions. “The music is very
accessible, and audience members should enjoy a good laugh.”

Richardson’s friend Brent Wilson, a
professional musician and director from California will be guest directing. Wilson
directed the Viterbo Chamber Opera Series’ recent production of Leonard
Bernstein’s Trouble In Tahiti, as
well as continuing to take part in Viterbo’s Opera Performance Workshop held
during the summer.

Both operas will be performed in
English and will run approximately a half hour each.

“Performing two one-act operas gives
Viterbo’s outstanding students more opportunities for roles,” Richardson said.
