Viterbo University freshman Alison Coovert chose to attend Viterbo, “Because I was looking for a university with a Catholic identity, that offered my major, and has a strong sense of community. Viterbo checked all the boxes on my list.”

“I have really loved it here so far, Coovert said. “Everything has exceeded any expectations. “The Viterbo faculty is extremely helpful. Everyone at Viterbo wants you to do your best and succeed.”

A native of Sycamore, Ill., Coovert is majoring in elementary education with a minor in special education. “I have always gravitated toward children and individuals with special needs, so I decided to make it my career,” she said. “My education courses are the most interesting to me. I love to learn more about children and how to be an effective and intentional teacher.”

In addition to her studies, Coovert is active with the Viterbo Education Club. Members gain a greater sense of responsibility, professionalism, and leadership by participating in professional and social opportunities in the La Crosse and Viterbo communities. Coovert is also serving as a site coordinator for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse at nearby Hamilton Elementary school.

Of the Viterbo and La Crosse communities, Coovert said, “I like how supportive the academic community is here. The La Crosse community is very diverse and fun.”

Upon graduation, Coovert intends to become an elementary special education teacher. She advises other students, “Be open to new experiences. Say ‘yes’ more than you say ‘no.’”
