Students in Viterbo’s Spanish 406 Advanced Composition Class wanted to put their skills to use. The outstanding result—the El Sol newspaper, which was officially launched at the La Crosse Area Work Shop on Latin America and Latino Studies at Viterbo April 16.

“We turned the classroom into a newsroom,” said Jesús Jambrina, world languages and cultures, who teaches the class. “I helped to revise some of the linguistics of the articles, but the students did the writing, interviewing, article selection and discussion, and the printing process.”

The project was made possible by a High Impact Practice Initiative grant funded by Viterbo. The goals of the grant include real world application, experiences with diversity, public demonstration of competence, and substantive faculty and peer interaction.

The articles in El Sol cover politics related to Spanish speaking people and countries, education, art, sports, and entertainment.
