Approximately 20 years ago, after receiving my doctorate, I wanted to try some higher education instruction. I read an article in the Des Moines Register about Viterbo and the master’s degree for teachers. I applied for a position and was interviewed by the person who would change my life forever, Earl Bridgewater. Earl introduced me to over one thousand teachers and allowed me to teach and administer to them for their master’s degree. I spent nine years at Viterbo under his tutelage and mentorship.
Earl was a brilliant leader and a great thinker. I am sure he felt his greatest achievement at Viterbo was the chance to get the Ed Leadership program approved by the Iowa Department of Education—a two year battle which he won. I would disagree. I would say his greatest achievement was kindness to all; he never forgot a friend and influenced my life forever. To this day I think about his wisdom and treatment of people. To a great man, peace.
