New York pianist and La Crosse native Dave Marck will present Isn’t It Romantic? The Music of Richard Rodgers Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Viterbo University Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.
Marck will be joined by longtime colleagues Greg Balfany on saxophone, Karyn Quinn on bass, and Rich MacDonald on drums. Balfany and Quinn retired from the music department at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, while MacDonald teaches percussion and is director of jazz studies at Winona State University.
Marck looks forward to featuring the music of Rodgers on this concert because he said, “jazz musicians have long revered the extraordinary melodic invention his tunes provide as springboards for improvisations. I'm looking forward to playing beautiful tunes with beautiful musicians for a beautiful audience.”
The 2019–20 “Defining Dates” Viterbo University Out-of-Our-Minds Chamber Music Series will open with Tribute to Two Hundred at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, in the Fine Arts Center's Nola Starling Recital Hall.
Tribute to Two Hundred will celebrate the music and 200th birthday of Clara Schumann, renowned 19th century pianist, composer, mother, collaborator, and archivist. The concert will be the first performance of the new ensemble, 2 Sisters Trio. The group is comprised of pianist Mary Ellen Haupert, music, and sisters Kristina Nocker Gullion, violin, and Monika Nocker Sutherland, cello. The sisters grew up in Chicago and both received a master’s degree in music performance from Indiana University.
Students talk to Maria Norberg ’09 (second from right), owner of Grounded Patio Café and Apothik food truck, at the Welcome Back Bash Aug.
