WORKS OF ARTIST PATRICK SCHMIDT TO OPEN 2015–16 VITERBO UNIVERSITY GALLERY SEASON SEPT. 16

LA CROSSE, WIS. – The paintings, drawings, textile, and sculpture of guest artist Patrick Schmidt will be featured in an exhibit entitled “Digitizing Myth: Archetypes and Identities” opening with reception at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 in the Viterbo University Gallery.

Schmidt is an associate professor of art at Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Penn., where he teaches painting, drawing, design, printmaking, and graphic design. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the country and in periodicals such as New American Paintings and New Art International.

“These paintings (and drawings) are cross-pollinated with printmaking, installation, sculpture, and craft to create a painted hybrid of sort while still maintaining the look, feel and smell of a painting,” wrote Schmidt in an artist statement. “The work explores the notion of understanding through repetition, structure(s), pattern as identity, and the in-between space.”

Schmidt earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Central Michigan University.

The exhibit will run until Friday, Oct. 30. There is no admission fee to the gallery, which is located on the third floor of the Viterbo Fine Arts Center. The gallery is open from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. when school is in session.
