VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S COMEDY A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM AT THE WEBER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS APRIL 17–19, APRIL 24–26
LA CROSSE, Wis. – The Viterbo University Theatre and Music Theatre department will present William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts Friday, April 17–Sunday, April 19 and Friday, April 24–Sunday, April 26.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most popular plays and is performed regularly across the world. It is the story of young lovers, charmed by a mischievous fairy who inhabits the forest in which the play is set, who fall in and out of love in a single, enchanted midsummer night.
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream is the original romantic comedy,” said Rick Walters, Viterbo theatre and music theatre department faculty member and director of the production. It’s delightful, fanciful, and it speaks to our romantic selves. It’s playful but also poignant. It looks at love and the strange and silly behaviors in which we engage in the pursuit of desire. It is also one of Shakespeare’s most accessible scripts.”
Walters is joined by fellow faculty members David Gardiner, who is the associate director for the production; Nancy Allen, who is serving as the music supervisor; and Shane Rhoades, who is doing the choreography.
All performance times are 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the 2 p.m. matinees April 19 and April 26. This Viterbo production will take place at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts in downtown La Crosse, which is a smaller and more intimate venue than the Viterbo Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.
“The Weber Center allows us to bring the production a little closer to the audience,” Walters said. “The facility offers beautiful views of the Mississippi River and the production will take place during what will hopefully be beautiful spring weather.”
