VITERBO UNIVERSITY TO PRESENT CROW AND WEASEL AT THE WEBER CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS JAN. 30–31; FEB. 5–6

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Viterbo University students will perform Crow and Weasel, a coming of age fable for the entire family Saturday, Jan. 30–Sunday, Jan. 31 and Friday, Feb. 5–Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts.

Set in a mythical time when the world was new and people and animals spoke the same language, two young and eager animal people embark on a quest to the Land Where Dreaming Begins. Facing new challenges and perils, Crow and Weasel conquer their fears and learn about their relationship to the land, respecting others, family and community, and being thankful.

“Crow and Weasel is a very well-written, well-crafted story and beautiful piece of theatre both children and adults will greatly enjoy,” said Rick Walters, the Viterbo theatre and music theatre department faculty member who is directing the production.

Crow and Weasel is based on the novel by author Barry Lopez, whose work is known for its environmental and social concerns. Lopez was described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “the nation’s premier nature writer.” The play was created by Jim Leonard Jr. and John Luther Adams.

“The story-telling aspect and theatricality of the production will be really impressive,” Walters said. “The imagery is also very exciting.”

Walters is joined by fellow Viterbo faculty members Chad Kolbe and Jeff Stolz, who are serving as the technical director/lighting designer and the costume designer, respectively. Local guest artist Eric Van Wyk is the scene designer. Students Abbie Cain and Bailee Schmidt are the prop master and assistant prop master, who are making props from driftwood collected along the Mississippi River.

This performance is part of Viterbo’s Ronald McDonald Arts for Young America Family Series and is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. It is sponsored by Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Wisconsin and Southeastern Minnesota. 101.1 FM The River is the media sponsor.
