VITERBO ONE-OF-A-KIND CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES CONCERT TO FEATURE WORLD PREMIERE APRIL 23

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The 2015-16 One-of-a-Kind Chamber Music Series will conclude Saturday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. with Keyed In–Solo Piano in the Viterbo University Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.

The program features pianist Mark Tollefsen, who is an assistant professor of music at Viterbo University. The concert focuses on the beauty and simplicity of solo piano and includes Arabeske in C Major, Op. 18 by Robert Schumann, Arabesque No. 2 by Claude Debussy, and Fantasy in C Major, D. 760, “The Wanderer,” by Franz Schubert.

“The program contains a lot of variety,” said Tollefsen. “The Schumann, Debussy, and Schubert works are standards in the piano repertory, but I will also be playing two newer works by friends of mine.”

The first, “A La Orilla Azul Del Silencio” by Douglas Pew, is based on lines from Pablo Neruda poems and is wonderfully evocative. The second, “Once Was” by David Lipten, is up-tempo and lively and was inspired by a work by 18th-century composer C. P. E. Bach. Tollefsen’s performance of “Once Was” will be a world premiere performance. “Listeners can enjoy the idea that they are the first ones to hear it,” said Tollefsen.

This is the final concert in the 2015-16 One-of-a-Kind series, but information about the 2016-17 season will be available April 23. Wisconsin Public Radio is the media sponsor for the One-of-a-Kind Chamber Music performances.

Tickets are $16 for general admission seating. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the Viterbo box office at 608-796-3100 or visit www.viterbo.edu/tickets.
