PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR TIM KASSER TO PRESENT “THE HIGH
COST OF MATERIALISM” AT VITERBO UNIVERSITY NOV. 7

CROSSE, Wis. – Knox College psychology professor Tim Kasser, Ph.D., will
present “The High Cost of Materialism” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7 in the
Viterbo University Fine Arts Center Main Theatre.

Kasser specializes in the study of
people’s values and goals and how they relate to quality of life. Over the past
decade, Kasser has focused on the study of material values such as being
wealthy, having many possessions, and being attractive and popular. He has
found that when people believe materialistic values are important, they report
less happiness and more stress, have poorer interpersonal relationships,
contribute less to the community, and engage in more ecologically damaging
behaviors. His presentation will come from the perspective of psychological
research.

Kasser is the author of The High Price of Materialism, Psychology
and Consumer Culture, Meeting
Environmental Challenges: the Role of Human Identity, and Lucy in the Mind of Lennon. He also is
involved with activist groups who work against the commercialization of children
and who work toward a more inwardly rich lifestyle that what is offered by
consumerism.
