The V-Hawks women's soccer alumna was recruited by the U.S. Soccer Federation and accepted the position of Senior Human Resources Generalist with the organization in December.
"A career in soccer was a dream for me," Walter said. "My educational and athletic experience at Viterbo definitely helped prepare me for this opportunity with U.S. Soccer. I learned so much about myself as a player, a teammate, and a leader. And the leadership training I received through the Dahl School of Business was invaluable."
After graduating from Viterbo, Walter worked in human resources for a major retail company and an international hospitality distributor. She also earned a Master's Degree in Exercise and Sport Science-Sport Administration and completed an internship with the Milwaukee Wave soccer franchise. After gaining professional experience in human resources, Walter was certified as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR). Her goal, however, remained a career in her favorite sport.
As a Senior Human Resources Generalist for the U.S. Soccer Federation, Walter's responsibilities include organizational development, recruiting, performance management, training, and compensation and benefits. She also collaborates with the members of the leadership team on strategic initiatives to continue to hire and retain top talent to grow the sport of soccer in the U.S.
"My Viterbo business law and human resources courses have been extremely valuable in my career path," Walter said. "The core values and emphasis on servant leadership became a guide for me as I developed my leadership style. Playing soccer at Viterbo definitely increased my knowledge of the sport at a much higher level, as well as my passion for the game. My collegiate experience helps me every day in my current role."
Walter offered some important advice for people seeking employment in the sports industry.
"It is important to build relationships, network, and have great references from a variety of different backgrounds," Walter said. "The sports industry, like many other fields, is very competitive. It is important to differentiate yourself from other candidates. You can differentiate yourself by completing internships, obtaining certifications, and building a strong support network. Making the most out of each opportunity along the way has helped prepare me for my career with the U.S. Soccer Federation."
