Olivia Abernathy

Junior biology major Olivia Abernathy knows how important it is to respect and understand each other, especially in today’s global society.

“There is no possible way to avoid diversity in our lives, so we need to be kind to each other and recognize there are many people with different life experiences and identities,” Abernathy said. “Educating ourselves opens up our entire world.”

Abernathy is sharing that message at Viterbo through her work as a member of the university’s Social Justice and Equity Committee and a leader in the Breaking Barriers Diversity Club. Among other initiatives, Abernathy is helping plan a workshop for black students regarding mental health, a particular interest of hers.

“I want to help people feel comfortable with their identities and in doing the things they want to do,” said Abernathy, who plans to become a doctor and practice family medicine in a rural area where she’ll treat patients of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life.

Abernathy chose to attend Viterbo because students receive a personal experience that allows them to make strong connections with faculty and classmates. This has certainly been the case for her, and she is very pleased with the education she is receiving.

“I love it here,” she said. “It’s a community that feels like home, and my time at Viterbo has been very enjoyable. I’ve started to break out of my shell and am involved in more than I was last year.”

In addition to diversity initiatives, Abernathy is the secretary of the DNA Science Club and serves as a campus tour guide and orientation leader. She also enjoys the outdoors, gardening and plants, working out at the gym, and exploring new places in La Crosse. The bluffs with their beautiful fall colors are her “absolute favorite” spot in the area.
