It is standard practice for international athletes to compile a highlight tape to send to coaches at universities in the U.S. at which they would like to play. Stand-out goalie Ernesto Ascenzo of Lima, Peru, did just that.
The Viterbo men’s soccer coaches certainly liked what they saw.
“Coach made me feel like I’d be taken care of at Viterbo, and that’s important when you’re coming from a different country,” said Ascenzo, a sophomore majoring in business administration. “I love it here. The team is amazing and we’re like a second family.”
Ascenzo was “received with open arms” on campus as well. He quickly landed a job in the university’s instructional and information technology help desk department. Chad Gilbeck, the help desk director, is also the men’s soccer team chaplain.
The guaranteed internships offered by the Viterbo Dahl School of Business are one aspect of his education Ascenzo really likes.
“I’m gaining experience, making connections, and I feel like my time is valued,” he said. “I’m very happy with the business education I am receiving. The focus is on the students, and the faculty want us all to be successful in life.”
Ascenzo has played soccer his entire life, and although he’s not sure why, he has always been drawn to the position of goalkeeper. He is one of the key players on Viterbo’s NAIA national championship contending team.
“Everyone on the team is talented, but also works really hard,” he said. “Talent only takes you so far.”
Outside of the classroom and off the soccer field, Ascenzo enjoys hanging out with his friends and girlfriend, movies, bowling, and going out to dinner. He looks forward to a career in business when his education is complete.
“I like marketing and digital media, but I haven’t decided yet,” he said. “I’m keeping my options open.”
