Step 2: Meet with a Designated School Official (DSO)
- Bring all required documents to have your OPT packet reviewed.
- Once your documents are verified, you will be issued a new I-20 with your OPT request.
- You must file your OPT application within 30 days of the new OPT I-20 issuance.
- Ken Felts is available Monday–Friday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Appointments with Melissa Giefer can be scheduled via Starfish.
- Plan for a 30–45 minute appointment if you want to file your application during your meeting (recommended).
Step 3: Submit Your OPT Application
- You can apply up to 90 days before your program completion date and no later than 60 days after your program completion date.
Step 4: After You Submit Your Application
- You will receive three pieces of mail from USCIS:
- I-797 Notice of Receipt (confirming USCIS received your application)
- I-797 Notice of Approval (once your application is approved)
- EAD (Employment Authorization Document) Card
- You cannot begin working until you receive your EAD card and the start date has arrived.
- Check your EAD card for accuracy and ensure the start date is correct.
- If you receive a Request for Additional Evidence (RFE) from USCIS, contact Designated School Official (DSO) before responding.
Step 5: SEVP Portal and Employment Reporting
- After receiving OPT approval, you will receive an email to set up your SEVP Portal account.
- You must update your address and employment information within 10 days of any change.
- If you encounter issues updating information in SEVP, contact your DSO.
Final Reminders
- Choose Your OPT Start Date Carefully: You must select a start date that falls within the 60-day grace period after your program completion. Consider this carefully before applying, as it will determine when you can begin working. If USCIS has not processed your application by your requested start date, they will adjust it to the approval date.
- If Your Application is Delayed: If USCIS has not processed your application by your requested start date, they will adjust it to the approval date.
- Keep Track of Your Unemployment Days: You cannot exceed 90 days of unemployment while on post-completion OPT.
- If You Plan to Travel: You need an EAD card, job offer letter, valid visa, and travel signature to reenter the U.S. See Travel Guide for OPT Students.
